This gorgeous cardigan sweater was made in the 1950s and modeled after the traditional Cowichan sweaters made by the indigenous people of British Columbia. These cozy sweaters are known for their thickness, which makes them ideal for layering against the cold. They also feature shawl neck collars, and are typically decorated with patterns that utilize the natural colors of un-dyed wool.  

The tag on this sweater says that it was hand-made by someone named Marion Yates. This cardigan is likely one of the many imitation Cowichans that emerged during the mid-20th century. Imitation Cowichans started to become particularly popular in the 50s, as yarn supply stores began selling knitting patterns that emulated these coveted sweaters. Many people weren't aware of the garment's indigenous origins, and most were simply eager to get their hands on a cardigan that was both fashionable and warm .
